May 18–Small Groups

Last small group chapel of the year. Students started by walking with their groups around the school outside, looking for metaphors of faith & spiritual growth. Students reflected on the past year and shared ideas for deepening their walk with God this summer in light of Hebrews 10:23-24: “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds…”

May 20–Summer Challenge

For the first time this year, chapel was mobile. We were able to see into the construction area in the high school. After looking around, we turned our attention to Luke 6:48, about building your house on the rock. Students were specifically challenged to deepen their foundation in Jesus by being more intentional about when they go to bed and when they wake up. How can they use music, their body, drawing, listening/reading and other creative ideas to focus more on God during these important times in the day?

The senior girls and boys who were voted on the Homecoming Court were interviewed by Mr. DeKoekkoek and Mrs. Zielke. We heard great responses from Sarah S., Bethany, Hannah, Sarah C., Nick, Josh, C.J. and Mike. Some of the questions: what is a favorite memory from high school? what does leadership look like? how has God worked in your life in high school?

A yearly tradition: Enjoy!

May 4–Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Chapel

Through song, Love Awakens Me & You’re a Child of God, video and testimony (w/ Danielle interviewing Maike), we celebrated asian/pacific islander culture, honored God and were reminded how God calls us to be bridge builders.

May 6–Pastor Danny Cancel

Pastor Danny’s talk centered on the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19 and our God-given ability to influence others. Here was the theme: we are called as believers in Jesus to influence this world. How? By being a witness and discipling others. This chapel laid out a great challenge to students—to live with God’s purpose guiding them.

May 5–MS Praise Band

MS Praise Band blessed us with three songs: Jericho, Even if and Truth be Told. Mr. Wiener then spoke about James 1:19, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” By dressing up in funny outfits, he emphasized that we need to value others and learn from others by listening, not making snap judgments.

April 27–Faith Church Worship Band

Faith CRC Worship Band. All the seniors were invited across the street to Faith’s sanctuary. Their band led us in worship. They are good! I had goose bumps when they began. We sang Joyful—the One Who Saves, O Come to the Altar, Who You Say I Am, Because of Your Love, Your Grace is Enough and The Blessing.

April 29–Small Groups

The last time for the seniors (all the “lasts” for seniors is starting!). The groups began with an activity that involved personally encouraging each other in the group. The focus of the Bible passages and questions was on our relationship with God in prayer and our call to bless our human relationships with encouragement.

April 14–Prayer

Similar to the high school prayer chapel last week, this was the most interactive chapel of the year. This chapel involved various types of prayer and Scripture reading that included intentional use of hands and body posture. Students in the auditorium and in the classroom were invited to stand, sit on a chair and even sit on the floor. They placed their hands over their heart, rested their open hands on their lap and raised their hands. What a wonderful time of prayer!
